As South Africa marks Transport Month this October, a new player is reshaping how bulky goods are moved across the country. Mister Transport, known as MrT, has officially launched as South Africa’s first on-demand delivery platform dedicated to medium to heavy loads, aiming not only to modernise logistics but also to create sustainable livelihoods for youth and women in a traditionally male-dominated sector. Developed by Good Earth Group in partnership with Nihka Technology Group, MrT connects customers directly with transporters in real time, offering a fast, technology-driven alternative to the slow, schedule-bound delivery models that many South Africans are used to. The platform was recently featured on Channel Africa, where Good Earth Group CEO Terrence Smith discussed the origins of MrT, its rapid growth and its contribution to a more inclusive transport economy. How MrT Evolved from Internal Innovation to National Platform
Internal development and early success
MrT began as an internal solution in 2020–2021. At the time, Good Earth Group was not a traditional transporter and had to adapt quickly to industry demands. The team embraced technology early, using the app exclusively for internal operations for several years.
Decision to launch publicly
Due to overwhelming success across Good Earth’s logistics ecosystem, the platform was opened to the public in September 2024. This means consumers are entering a system that has been tested, refined, and proven through years of real-world delivery operations.
Corporate Partnerships Driving High Delivery Volumes
MrT has already completed thousands of deliveries and secured two major national retail partnerships. The platform currently moves approximately 11,000 tons or around 13,000 deliveries per month, with more corporate agreements in advanced stages. This strong operational foundation provided the incentive to expand the service to independent customers, removing the long-standing dependency on retailers’ fixed delivery schedules.
How the MrT Platform Works
An e-hailing model for heavy goods
Mr. Smith compared MrT to an e-hailing service, except that instead of transporting people, the platform moves medium to large goods. The app connects customers with available transporters in real time, anywhere in South Africa.
A hybrid national fleet
MrT uses Good Earth’s own national fleet, regional operators across all major provinces, and independent third-party drivers. This hybrid structure allows the platform to scale rapidly and provide same-day delivery for most medium-to-large items.
Solving South Africa’s Delivery Delays
Traditional retailer delivery slots often require customers to wait days for transport. With MrT, a customer can request a suitably sized vehicle while standing in-store and have their goods delivered immediately. The same functionality applies to international users who wish to coordinate deliveries remotely for family members in South Africa.
Empowering Youth and Women in a Male-Dominated Industry
Breaking industry barriers
MrT was purposely built with socioeconomic inclusion in mind. The company actively recruits women and youth, removing barriers and promoting accessibility.
Real examples of progress
Despite launching publicly only in September, the platform already features three women owners, based in KwaZulu-Natal, Johannesburg, and Cape Town, and numerous young drivers. With youth unemployment exceeding 50%, the opportunity to earn income or build a transport business has generated strong interest.
Aligning with Transport Month and Peak Retail Season
MrT’s public launch aligned with Transport Month to maximise awareness and momentum. A soft launch in September was followed by a full-scale rollout in October. This strategy aims to build towards a high-demand “perfect storm” leading into Black Friday and the festive season, when large-item deliveries surge nationwide.
Addressing Reliability and Capacity in Heavy-Goods Transport
The heavy-goods delivery sector faces significant reliability challenges. MrT solves this through its combination of a national fleet and a growing network of independent operators, allowing the platform to meet peak and off-peak demand with efficiency. Most medium-to-large items qualify for same-day delivery, with only extremely large or complex loads requiring extended logistics planning.
The Future of MrT: Sustainability & Electric Vehicle Integration
Smith confirmed that sustainability is a core part of MrT’s long-term strategy. The company has already explored electric commercial vehicles in the medium-to-large category. With fuel representing up to 45% of transport operating costs, electric vehicles offer both environmental and financial benefits. Demand for EV commercial fleets is growing rapidly, with some models already sold out due to national corporate commitments. MrT aims to be an early pioneer in adopting and promoting sustainable logistics.
